Ground Control To Major Tom

  • You have until this Friday to file to run for judicial office this year.
  • There is a shortage of parking spots downtown and it's only getting worse. [RJ]
  • Dave Rice is out as the coach of the UNLV men's basketball team. [Fox5Vegas]
  • RIP Davie Bowie. [BBC]
  • Powerball is at $1.4 Billion--are you playing?
  • What else is going on out there?

  1. When I first started practicing in 2011, there was plenty of free parking near the RJC. My favorite was the Golden Nugget. You just had to go inside and get your card stamped. Now, they make you validate with actual gambling or pay for the parking.

  2. Feeling the urge to play? Try this:http://powerball-simulator.com/ I've let it run for 20 minutes, and after 40 years, I'm down $8k.

    1. That simulator is even more generous than the real thing now because they changed the numbers so you choose 5 numbers from 1-69 and then a powerball from 1-26. Odds are closer to 1 in 292,000,000. That said, you can't win if you don't play.

    2. I bought a few lotto tickets for the last drawing. Here's my flawed logic: Somebody's going to win it eventually. I deserve to win it more than anybody else. So I might as well play.

    3. Don't be too hard on yourself about the logic you use in this regard. After al, it is the exact same logic used by every single person who plays.

  3. Other than the fact that Fremont East is full of pretentious douches (really Commonwealth, a cover charge. There is a bum peeing on the sidewalk across the street.), the lack of (free) parking is the main reason I avoid Fremont. I think the last time I parked at the Fremont Street Experience it was like $20, and some casinos don't even let you valet unless you are actually staying at the hotel. Nevermind that I'm planning on spending $400 on a steak dinner for two at your restaurant... I'm looking at you The D.

    1. Now that free parking isn't automatic on the Strip, I wonder if that will take away one of the big criticisms locals have about going downtown....

  4. Where is Leiker (LIker) going to pop up in a judicial race. Just does not seem right without the lunatic fringe. (Apologies to Gale)

  5. So long Dave Rice. You suck. You can recruit, but you have no idea how to manager a roster, egos, or make half time adjustments. You'll do great as an assistant somewhere.

Now, please do not hire Reggie Theus!

And fire the AD. She needs to go.

  6. I don't get the Todd Simon as interim coach deal at all. You have Stacey Augmon and pick him?

    1. A very sad reality is becoming apparent at UNLV - boosters have 100% control over its major sports. UNLV's football team has a high school coach - Sanchez via Bishop Gorman, the hand-picked selection of the Fertittas, et. al. Now Todd Simon, barely removed from the High School ranks at Findlay Prep, is selected by Cliff Findlay to be the basketball team's head coach. I understand that boosters at many schools play an outsized role in the athletics department, but this is ridiculous. The A.D. Kunzer-Murphy needs to go as well - she's shown zero ability to make sound hiring decisions and has let the boosters run amok. A good A.D. would certainly try to assuage the boosters without handing them the reigns.

  8. In a shock to everyone, Rep. Fiore was one of five out of Oregon elected officials who "intervened" into the armed take over of a bird sanctuary.
