Ebeneezer Scrooge

  • Turns out the RJ's mystery buyer was Sheldon Adelson, but not personally. [RJ; Las Vegas Sun]
  • Defense lawyers in a mortgage fraud case are trying to get a new trial. [RJ]
  • Here are details on the special legislative session that commenced yesterday. [Las Vegas Sun]
  • A group is suing to block an increase in Nevada's minimum wage. [LasVegasNow]
  • A little birdy tells us that Eglet's office has fired multiple staff members right before bonus/Christmas time. Apparently, one employee was even fired during her lunch as she heated her lunch. She also happened to be a single mom who had no car and had to sit outside in the cold while she waited for her ride. Our tipster also says that it seems like they haven't been able to keep a full staff since Wall & Christiansen last August. Anyone have more details? Anyone know of any other sightings of Scrooge this Christmas?

  1. Dayam. There is Scrooge, then there is ruthless sob. Unless there was a RICO level conspiracy against the attorneys, that is excusable. Remaining stuff better polish their resume.

    1. That is so cruel. Unless an employee does something so reprehensible to warrant an immediate escort off the premises, a 2- week notice to an employee is warranted. If that story about Eglet's office is true, I find it offensive.

    2. It is nice that Eglet can have a "VIP," (bought and paid for judges) Christmas party, but he cannot afford to pay his support staff. Nice, Eglet.

    3. You're all just haters and jealous of what a real attorney can do in the courtroom.

    4. We typically would not fire someone right before the Holidays unless some kind of gross malfeasance was involved. But once someone is let go, we give them a check (two weeks or maybe even four depending on the circumstances) collect their key, and get them out the door. Why would you want to give someone two weeks of advance notice so that they can As plant whatever stink bombs they want? As far as the Eglet firm is concerned, it is a high-pressure atmosphere with lots of big cases and personalities to deal with. Not my cup of tea personally, but most people should realize that going in at this point.

    5. Yes, Eglet, real lawyers have to pay for judicial elections to succeed in front of those same judges.

    6. Speaking of Eglet, is anybody going to run against Mr. Susan Johnson, I mean Eric Johnson? It is crazy we have a husband and wife team on the same bench.

    7. Yes, Mr. Bob, you fired me without notice with babies to feed. You are a jerk. Merry Christmas!

    8. Dennis Prince is a helluva a guy. Why did him and Keating split up?

    9. Who cares if Eglet fired staff. They were not doing a good job. He gives severance pay. Should someone employee a crappy employee or cut them a check and let them find a new job. Jobs are not charity. If you feel so sorry from the single mom, then hire her. Oh yeah, you don't want a shit employee either.

    10. Thanks, Tracy. No one cares that he fired someone. The problem is how he did it. And I know for a fact Eglet doesn't give severance, not now, not ever. Don't believe me, let's ask the last three employees fired this month alone.

    14. 7:26, when should they be fired? Do you keep employees who suck? I am just not one who feels sorry for someone who gets fired. Make yourself indispensable by doing a great job and you have no worries. If you are so concerned for them you should hire them. I don't think money is the issue. They hired Aaron Ford who does not work, except on politics, so I doubt the $60,000 secretary salary is breaking them.

    15. They should be fired by Aaron Ford, wearing a bowtie, in the Eglet break room, heating up her Marie Callendar's frozen dinner, a week before, Christmas, with no hazard pay having to look at Eglet's bad rug every day.

    16. What kind of name is tyke?

    17. $60k for a secretary? LOL your office has never paid that much. You pulled a dick move, thinking no one would find out or care. It's your MO, we all know it, just own it.

    18. In Las Vegas, $60,000 is not uncommon for a GOOD legal secretary. When I practiced in LA, a 15 year secretary at my office was making more than the first year associates (and she was worth every penny).

    19. No one lasts in Eglet's office. I don't know if they're getting fired or burning out or just not getting along with the Eglets. Either way, I'd never work there.

    20. Didn't used to be that way, used to be a good place to work. High morale, low turn over. Since the Christiansen split they've lost about 75% of their staff, and can't seem to keep the replacements.

  2. Perfect, Eglet's office can be the new NV Supreme Court/Appeals Court building.

  3. For those wondering what happened to the Sands v. Suen oral argument, which was scheduled for 10 am today, I checked the docket and it has been rescheduled for an en banc argument on January 26. It looks like Alan Dershowitz will be appearing on behalf of Sands. All of this is based on motions filed 2 days ago.

  4. Let me lament the state of media/journalism in this city.

The LVRJ is now owned by an idealogue.

The Sun has reduced itself to an entertainment tabloid.

Local TV news is nothing more than the same shocking crimes everyday with stories about obvious "tips" (tips to protect yourself from online identity theft/tips for how to drive safe/etc). Very, very lazy.

There is no commercial news talk station now that KXNT is back on AM with nothing but right wing shows all day.

Thoughtful political discourse is polluted and stymied by petty, ad hominem slinging, self-promoting hacks, Jon Ralston on the left and Chuck Muth on the right.

This city has almost no responsible, hard working, talented media outlets serving and watching out for it. I've lived all around the country and it still blows my mind how bad journalism is in a city of 2M.

    1. Blame the internets and cable tv. Not that the RJ was ever a great paper, but even the great newspapers are hurting and have become mere shells of their former selves. News and thoughtful opinion have been supplanted by entertainment and the Kardashians. That this is happening in Las Vegas should come as no big surprise.

    2. I would rather read the Las Vegas Tribune, than Adelson's rag. Thank you, Greenspuns. You made a lot of money in this town, and you just sold your integrity to the highest bidder.

      Delete
    3. Greenspuns would have had nothing to do with the sale of the RJ, the Sun is simply in a Joint Operating Agreement with the RJ.

      Delete
    4. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe under a newspaper JOA the other paper must approve of any sale. I know this is true for the Tribune and Deseret News in Salt Lake. I believe it is also true of the RJ/Sun, but I'm not sure. Could someone clarify this?

    5. Greenspuns, are you going to continue on with Adelson?

  6. Not all employers were Scrooge this year. Just got my bonus and despite a decline in billables this year (my first children-twins-were born a few months ago), my bonus stayed the same as last year. Hat tip to the good guys.

  7. More dirty dealings from the US Attorneys Office. Have to love the defense that it does not matter how poisonous the fruit or the tree, we have lots of produce.

  8. I am not sure if it is the economy or being sociopaths, but the absolute illegality of what attorneys get away with in this city is outrageous. You cannot even rely on attorneys who you are related to. Happy Holidays to you. What goes around comes around.
