The Infamous February Bar Exam

Lest we forget, today concludes the 2013 February Bar Exam. Here's your chance to commiserate about the horrors of an exam that has, within the last five years, had a pass rate as low as 48%. Unfortunately, there is not much consolation we can offer to someone taking this exam except to point out that the July exam usually has a pass rate much better than a 50/50 chance.

In somewhat related news, Arizona law schools have petitioned the Arizona Supreme Court to allow law students to take the bar exam during their third year of law school. You can read about it here. That would certainly change the dynamic of the February bar exam if it were adopted in Nevada. What do you think--should 3Ls be able to take the bar before graduation?

  1. I have taken - and passed - over my 30+ year career bar exams in 4 states, each on the first try and years apart. I think of the bar exam as a fraternity hazing. It bears no relation to real life practice. I would rather see it replaced with apprenticeships, mentoring and skills testing. That said, if a 3L wants to take it early, so be it. I am an advocate of replacing the 3rd year of law school with apprenticeship and skills practice programs. Most 3rd year courses are worthless in real life.

  5. The February exam has a lower pass rate for two reasons. First, in order to accommodate Boyd Law School and the silly US News arms race, July gets a higher pass rate to preserve Boyd's numbers. Second, February has a higher percentage of dullards that are retaking the exam. Completely agree with 9:23 AM. 2 years of law school plus 2 years of apprenticeship and skills testing would be a better way to go. The bar exam is a hazing. Law school is a scam. I am second year associate. I can honestly say that I have learned about 20x more in two years of practice than I did in 3 years of law school.

  6. Which floor at the courthouse is the best to use the bathroom? I find that the upper echelon floors (district court level) have the most cleanest, quietest, and friendly environment.

  8. Just curious, how does a higher pass rate in July help Boyd with US News? Do they only count the July bar?

  9. July is typically the first time law graduates takes the bar. The US News rankings factors in first time bar passage rate. It also looks at other times, but since most of the grads take it for the first time in July, the Nevada Bar can "help" Boyd by increasing the pass rate. http://www.usnews.com/education/best-graduate-schools/top-law-schools/articles/2012/03/12/methodology-law-school-rankings?page=2
