UPDATED

TGIF, everyone!  Whats going on out there?

Also, since its that season, lets talk bonuses..

Who's getting a bonus this year?  When do you get it, how much is it and how was it its calculated?

Who's giving bonuses?  To whom, when, and how much are you giving?

Update - Judge Herndon has recused himself from sentencing the former Las Vegas Deputy District Attorney David Schubert, claiming he couldn't "reconcile" himself with the probation plea agreed to by the parties.  Thoughts?

  1. Got mine yesterday! Third-year associate, mid-sized pi and cd defense firm, billed 1990 hours this year, bonus is more than $15k/less than $20k. Beats a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

  2. Small firm, no bonus. Miss the bonus but not enough to go back to billing 2000 hours a year.

  3. Billing 2000 and actually working 2000 are two differnt things.

  5. Well 12:46, not sure exactly what you mean, but I also don't miss competing with colleagues who billed 2000+ hours while "working" less. Something about that always seemed strangely like fraud to me.

  6. 7th year associate - $10,000 bonus

Made about $110,000 this year including the bonus.

  7. Is anybody hiring? I was laid off from my law firm?

  8. No bonus this year. Kind of sucked.

  9. I was planning on using my Christmas bonus to put in a swimming pool. I just found out that instead of a bonus, my boss enrolled me in the "Jelly of the Month" club.

  10. Opened my own firm. For my bonus, I bought myself Resident Evil 4 for my Wii.

  11. I just got an offer to lateral to a Vegas firm, but I don't think they're stable. What firms do you guys think are looking good and bad for the future? I guess that's hard to tell.

  12. @2:07: The Nevada Legal Directory has 50 pages of firms and you want us to guess whether the firm you are asking about is one that you asking about? Ask about the one about which you want to know.

  13. Generally, if you're getting the vibe that the potential new firm is not stable, I suggest you trust your gut. Either that, or you've got to name names, 2:07.

  14. @2:07,

Trust your gut. That said, I don't think LSC, Bailey Kennedy, MAC, Gordon Silver, Jones Vargas, ATMS, or CPK is going to implode anytime in the near future, but my reasoning is based entirely on history and CPK's smile. You might think differently.

  15. Anyone else's hours down this year? I billed 1,600. If the partners would hand me some work like they're supposed to, then I would bill it. Yes, I'm frustrated.

  16. My hours are down this year for the same reason. We get reviews this week, and this is something I am planning to address.

  17. Solution: go out and get your own work. By the way, that's also how you become a partner.

  18. It isn't often that depo video get's posted online, but the Sun has a ten minute video of Sheldon Adelson's depo. http://www.lasvegassun.com/videos/2011/nov/16/5993/

Although I probably wouldn't have terminated the deposition at the point Campbell did, the video makes it pretty clear that Hicks was being a dick. Not that he's alone among attorneys who make absurd objections and demand explanations during depos, instead of just moving for a protective order.

  19. I always find it fascinating to see the comments made by non-lawyers in response to these news articles. Most LV Sun commenters supported Adelson and his atty even though "Hicks was being a dick" (I agree). I felt my blood boiling just listening to that guy mouth off.

  20. Hicks was a dick because Adelson wanted him to be a dick. Adelson is one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in the world. Does anyone really think he's scared of Campbell? If Campbell gets everything he wants in this case, Adelson can take it out of his grocery money and pay it. Adelson is simply demonstrating that if you have enough money, no one - not Don Campbell, not a Federal judge - no one can fuck with you. And he's using Hicks to do his bidding.

Campbell is a great lawyer - but when he's trying to extract money from the pockets of guys like Adelson, Rizollo, Gallardi, etc. he has to expect a little push back.
